Workshop 1

Yuko Kaseki Japanese Butoh dancer

Frontier in the Body
14th - 17th February 2025 (Women participants)

19th - 22nd February 2025(Mixed group for all gender)

With Yuko Kaseki

Explore the body as a frontier, delving into its hidden, untouched fields of emotions, memories, and sensations. Through this workshop, we will research every detail of the body, breaking it down and reconnecting the parts in new ways. We’ll observe the habitual movements shaped by socialization, using dysfunction as a tool for creation, discovering new layers of vision and bodily systems.

The workshop focuses on developing original movement through physical training, honing body awareness, and improvisation with imagery, gesture, space, and relationships. Training is grounded in Noguchi gymnastics, Noguchi Seitai, Butoh methodology, and elements of Tai Chi. We aim to awaken the whole body, working from the center (Tanden), our core energy source, to deepen our sensitivity. Participants will learn to listen inwardly and relate this awareness to the external world.

You’ll have the opportunity to engage in solo, duet, and group improvisations, exploring movement through both intensity and reduction. The goal is for each person to dive deep into their unique physical expression, translating movement into individual manifestations of reality and presence.

Yuko Kaaseki is a director, choreographer, Butoh dancer, performer, and teacher based in Berlin. Her solo and ensemble performances, including improvisations, have been presented in over 30 countries. Her work is an accumulation of poetic and vivid imagery that embodies the spirit of Butoh, performance, and live art. She focuses on reflecting the existence of the outsider, striving to bridge the gap between physical and spiritual expression. Yuko trains daily to capture the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Her collaboration with Berlin’s Disabled Theater Thikwa has profoundly impacted her approach, challenging her ideas of dance and greatly influencing her subsequent work. She is deeply committed to breaking the boundaries of physical expression and collaborates with international mixed-ability artists.

Workshop 2

Feminist Story Telling: Crafting Empowered Scripts
Dates to be confirmed

The concept of the female gaze transcends the conventional portrayal of women merely as objects of fantasy for men, instead striving to authentically represent them as multifaceted human beings. In essence, it seeks to unravel the complexity of female experiences and perspectives through a lens unburdened by traditional stereotypes.

The forthcoming workshop endeavors to create an empowering space tailored for intrepid women who are driven to craft narratives that go beyond the norm. It beckons those with an insatiable curiosity to explore uncharted territories and redefine the portrayal of femininity and sexuality within the realm of narrative cinema. This is an opportunity to challenge and recalibrate the narrative landscape, fostering a new era of storytelling that echoes the voices and stories of women.

This workshop, enriched by Gitanjali Rao's guidance, invites fearless women creators to join in the exploration of new storytelling dimensions, as they challenge the entrenched male gaze and unveil the narratives that have long remained untold. It's an exceptional opportunity to embark on a journey of artistic evolution, forging a path towards more inclusive and authentic narratives.

Facilitator: Gitanjali Rao (Director: Bombay Rose)

Experiential learning: transplanting rice saplings 9am-6pm.

Simple vegetarian lunch and evening snacks will be provided.

Experiential learning is that learning which is an inevitable product of experience; originating from the idea that experiences are generated through our ongoing interactions and engagement with the world around us. This theory of learning is different from cognitive and behavioral learning theories as it takes a more holistic approach. It considers the role that all of our experiences play in our learning, including our emotions, cognition and environmental factors.

The experiential learning theory advocates for deep learning rather than surface learning. Surface learning normally involves studying about food groups and how it affects our health, which might be achieved through memorizing information in a textbook, and information may not be retained well.
